Cato-Meridian boys hoops ends regular season on high note with win over Weedsport (36 photos)

Cato-Meridian boys basketball took down Weedsport, 66-49, in an Onondaga High School League matchup on Friday night.

The victory avenges a loss the Blue Devils suffered to the Wolverines nearly a month ago.

The Blue Devils extended their win streak to six games. The last game Cato-Meridian lost was on Jan. 16. Weedsport won that game 54-52.

After a slow start on Friday, the Blue Devils were able to adjust and pull out a victory with a good all-around team performance.

“We came out a little sluggish tonight but we settled down and came out and moved the ball well and executed,” Cato-Meridian coach Cody Humberstone said. “Everyone played a great role in a team win tonight.”

A theme of the game for the Blue Devils was the next man up, especially after a few key players got into foul trouble.

“De’Von Adams and Finley (Stonecypher) got into foul trouble, so we had to rely on Carter (Impson), Preston (Daggett) and Perry (Planck IV), and Dylan (McGetrick) had to step up and take that role of playing out our big man in the middle,” Humberstone said. “We stuck together, played as a team, played team defense, and did the right things to stay ahead and pull the game away.”

Impson scored a season-high 24 points in the victory. Daggett and Plank IV added 13 points each.

For Weedsport, three players scored in double figures. Lucio Cole led the team with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Mason Kocur added 13 points, while Brady Docteur added 10 points of his own.

Despite heading into sectionals riding a six-game win streak, Humberstone’s team is not satisfied just yet.

“In that locker room tonight, our kids were excited and stuff, but they realized there’s unfinished business that they wanna take into the playoffs,” he said. “They’ve been working hard for the last two years to get to this point, and we’re excited and hopefully we can make a run in the playoffs.”

Weedsport (12-7) closes its regular season with a matchup against Mater Dei Academy on Tuesday. Cato-Meridian’s regular season ends with a 14-6 record.
