Update: The article has been updated with new information about resident displacement from the Syracuse Fire Department.
Syracuse, N.Y. -- Nine people were displaced from two apartments after a fire broke out at Pioneer Homes in Syracuse Friday morning.
Syracuse firefighters rushed to 1113 South Townsend St. around 11:30 a.m. and saw black smoke and flames coming from a second-story window, District Chief Matthew Craner said.
Syracuse Fire Investigators determined that the fire was accidental and started by unattended candles in the second-floor apartment’s living room.
All residents were evacuated by the time firefighters arrived and no one was injured, Craner said. Firefighters put the fire out quickly, but the second-story apartment had smoke, fire and water damage, he said. The first-floor apartment was damaged by water that leaked from the apartment above, Craner said.
The displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross, Craner said.
Pioneer Homes is a Syracuse Housing Authority property.
