Two leaders of the Syracuse Housing Authority came away from a meeting with SUNY Upstate last Friday with a commitment, in writing, for the hospital to build a $125 million optometry school on land soon to be vacated by 86-year-old public housing units.

It was more than SHA Director Bill Simmons ever expected when he approached the hospital about building a health clinic in one of the senior towers next to the hospital campus.
