This year’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers is a matchup of historical heavyweights, but both teams are chasing two teams for most championships in NFL history.

The top two teams, both tied with six Super Bowl wins, are the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since Patrick Mahomes took over, the Chiefs have won two Super Bowls (2020 and 2023). The Chiefs also won the Super Bowl in 1970 and three league championships (1962, 1966 and 1969) when they were in the AFL, a league that merged into the NFL. That puts them three away from the top spot.

Success for the 49ers came in the 1980s and ’90s, spearheaded by Joe Montana. The 49ers won in 1982, 1985, 1989 and 1990 with Montana at the helm. They also won in 1995 with quarterback Steve Young, who was Montana’s backup for the 1989 and 1990 Super Bowls.

The Chiefs are tied for seventh place for most Super Bowl wins. The 49ers are tied for third, one Super Bowl win behind the Patriots and Steelers.

With a win on Sunday, the Chiefs would move one Super Bowl win behind the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, and two Super Bowl wins behind the Patriots and Steelers. They would be tied with the Packers and Giants with four Super Bowl wins.

If the 49ers win, they will be tied for the most Super Bowl wins, joining the conversation for the best franchise in NFL history.
