One headline of Super Bowl 58 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers is the coaching matchup between Chiefs coach Andy Reid and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.
Shanahan is on the younger side of coaches at 44 years old. He comes from a coaching tree -- more specifically, his father Mike Shanahan’s coaching tree -- and doesn’t have one of his own. Numerous successful head coaches currently in the NFL coached with Kyle Shananan under his father in Washington in 2013.
Andy Reid, at 65 years old, has an extensive coaching tree, including two of the AFC’s top coaches: The Buffalo Bills’ Sean McDermott and the Baltimore Ravens’ John Harbaugh.
Reid also produced head coach Doug Pederson, the current Jacksonville Jaguars head coach, who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. Harbaugh is the only other head coach from the coaching tree to win a Super Bowl, winning with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013.
Todd Bowles is the only other current head coach from Reid’s coaching tree. Ron Rivera, who was recently fired by the Commanders after four seasons with the team, is part of Reid’s tree.
Other head coaches from Reid’s coaching tree are Brad Childress (Minnesota Vikings, 2006-2010), Steve Spagnulo (St. Louis Rams, 2009-2011), Leslie Frazier (Vikings, 2010-2013), Pat Shurmur (five total seasons with Browns, Eagles and Giants), Matt Nagy (Chicago Bears, 2018-2021) and David Culley (Houston Texans, 2021).
